Why transfers get cancelled or postponed
The hospital moved the appointment, discharge slipped a day, the patient developed a fever, no bed was free at the receiving hospital, the weather was unsafe or the family decided otherwise. None of this is unusual; what matters is telling us as soon as you know.
| Notice given | Usually |
|---|---|
| A day or more ahead | No charge; easy to rebook |
| Same day, before the vehicle leaves | Often no charge; varies by provider |
| After the vehicle has set off | Travel costs may be charged |
| After the crew has arrived | The job may count as partly done |
Terms are firmer for intercity transfers and hire, where vehicle and crew are reserved in advance. Ask for them in writing with the quote.
Say “postpone” rather than “cancel” if a new date is known. For discharge delays, book for the nurse’s estimate and call again as paperwork finishes. In unsafe winter conditions the crew postpones; ask about the terms with the quote. See what is and is not included in a quote.
