Why we ask about weight
A two-person crew is enough for a standard transfer. As weight rises — especially with stairs — two people put both the patient and themselves at risk. An approximate figure sets crew size, stretcher and carrying method. The question is only about safety.
| Factor | Why |
|---|---|
| Weight and height | Stretcher capacity and crew size |
| Mobility | Can the patient bear some of their own weight |
| Building | Floor, lift width, stair type, door widths |
Four or more people may carry, planned in advance. Equipment may include a wide high-capacity stretcher, a transfer sheet or slide board and suitable stair equipment.
Clear the route from the bedroom to the front door, check door widths and the lift’s capacity, and keep a space for the vehicle right at the entrance. Tell us about pressure sores and the most comfortable position. See patient transfer ambulance.
