Going home after surgery: preparing the house for the first 24 hours

In short

After surgery the journey home takes half an hour; the first 24 hours at home affect how recovery goes. The position and height of the bed, access to the toilet, medicines to hand and someone present overnight are the four key preparations. This article goes through the house room by room.

Before the patient arrives

Do not leave preparation until discharge morning.

Bedroom. Ideally on the ground floor so the crew can bring the stretcher alongside; bed high enough that feet touch the floor when sitting; at least one side clear; extra pillows; water, medicines, phone and a night light within reach; rugs removed.

Bathroom. A clear, lit route from the bed; a bedpan or commode if needed; a raised toilet seat and non-slip mat; ask when showering is allowed.

Medicines. Collect them before leaving hospital, write the times down, ask when the first painkiller is due and who will give any blood-thinner injections.

First night. Do not leave the patient alone.

When the crew arrives, keep the way clear and doors held; do not try to help lift. See patient transfer ambulance.
